Typografika Erik

I’ve been meaning to feature my friend, educator, typographer and graphic designer Erik Brandt for a while now. Erik’s work is a fascinating mix of bold colors and typography, often with underlying political and environmental themes. Be sure to also check out his fantastic visual communication blog Geotypografika.

The Drawing Bryant

Illustrator Will Bryant collaborates with photographer Adam Voorhes to create a stop motion animation for the cover of Bluetooth’s quarterly publication Signature.

We incorporated the cover copy and the logo into the illustration and filled the cover with Will’s signature style.

The feel of the video reminded me of one of my earlier posts about Serge Seidlitz. Where is the wall you draw on?

David A. Smith does high quality, hand crafted reverse glass signs and decorative silvered and gilded mirrors. This short documentary by film maker Danny Cooke reveals behind the scenes work, techniques and visions that Dave uses when carrying out his passion as a glass embosser.

Cover Creation

There’s a lot of work involved in making a quality magazine. Some people don’t realize it but only the cover can be a labor of countless hours. A magazine cover plays a pivotal role in selling a magazine to readers and therefore should be really thought through.

This fantastic video shows how the process of making a cover for Macworld Magazine. From product photography and photo manipulation to layout and graphic design. The video is shown in a time lapse format which makes for an entertaining and fast paced experience.

Lots of details were left out of the design process (like the cover meetings and rounds of layout options). I began to photograph the design process after the layouts had already been narrowed down to just three cover designs.

Legacy of Letters

This is probably the most beautiful thing I’ve seen for a while. Luca Barcellona, Milano, writes a stunning fraktur for the Legacy of Letters tour of Italy.
The gestures are so deliberate, yet still and soft. A perfect conversation between mind and body. It’s a complete joy to watch. (Especially when he finishes the fraktur with the pointy y-descender, leaving that treat for the very end.)

See more of Luca’s lovely work at his Flickr page.

Check out more great videos and creative at the Creators Project website.

The Making of a Typeface

Carl Crossgrove, a type designer living in the San Francisco, shares his process of creating a typeface with the readers of I love Typography. The post shows sketches, inspiration and process that dates back from the year 1990.

I typically sketch letter shapes over and over, throughout the process of development, so that while the outlines are evolving in digital format, I’m testing shapes on paper at the same time

The Making of a T-shirt

The Making of a T-shirt is a short documentary by BDC on how screen printed T-shirts are made at howies printshop. I recommend that you read the history of the company on their website. Very inspiring.

Lets use this company of ours to make people think.
